When spines aren’t enough

Rescue

It’s not very often we see hedgehogs arrive with puncture wounds to their face. With over 5,000 spines, these little warriors have a near-impenetrable armour that usually keeps them safe from harm. But sadly, one otherwise healthy male found himself in desperate need of help.

After a three-day stay at a local vet practice, he was transferred into our care. His injuries told a worrying story – puncture wounds to his face had caused severe swelling along one side of his jaw. This swelling made it difficult for him to breathe and left one of his nostrils blocked.

As if that wasn’t already enough for this poor hog to deal with, an examination revealed even more. He had a painful, infected pocket around a tooth, and his abdomen was distended – adding further concern to his fragile condition.

Rehabilitation

Our veterinary team wasted no time. Pain relief and antibiotics were started straight away, giving him the comfort and fighting chance he desperately needed. For now, he’s taken up residence in our vet room, where he’s being kept under extra-close watch.

Despite everything he’s endured, there’s a glimmer of hope. Weighing in at over 900 grams, he’s one of the healthier hogs we’ve seen in recent weeks — which means he’s got reserves of strength on his side. Still, we remain puzzled as to how he sustained such unusual and painful injuries.

What we do know is he’s safe now, in expert hands, with warmth, care, and treatment giving him the very best chance of recovery.

We’ll keep you updated on his progress as this brave little hedgehog continues his journey to healing.
