Rescue
On the 2nd of November 2025 the hospital saw three tiny hoglets brought into our care. They had been brought in as their nest was disturbed. Sadly, one of the three hoglets sustained a severe back injury from a garden fork, which caused irreparable damage. Despite our best efforts, this hoglet was unfortunately put to sleep.
The remaining two hoglets appeared to be well – each weighing at about 110g which is very small for this time of year! They were transferred to a dedicated home carer, where they could receive continuous care to carry on developing.
Rehabilitation
On 24th November 2025, the two hoglets, now three times their original size, were returned to our hospital from homecare after developing severe diarrhoea and weight loss. This raised significant concern for our veterinary team, and they were immediately placed under urgent care for further treatment. Blood and green slime were found in the hoglets poo suggesting salmonella bacterial infection.
Since being in urgent care, both hoglets have been putting on weight and eating fine and their faeces looks a lot better.
As of the 27th of November 2025, both hoglets have been eating well and look very healthy. They now both weigh between 318-367g, a huge difference to when they first arrived at the hospital! Both hoglets are very active so have now been moved from urgent care to a different area in the hospital – it looks like they are moving in the right direction.
We wish both hoglets well in their recovery and hope to see them back in the wild soon. However, this story is a reminder to please be wary and check your garden before starting garden works as you never know who you might share your garden with.
