Rescue

This young hedgehog is, we think, a world first!

Originally arriving with us after being found out in the day, an examination found a horrible injury… the hard palate (the forward part of the roof of the mouth) and both sides of the upper jaw were fractured, leaving the poor hedgehog unable to eat and suffering from breathing difficulties.

Rehabilitation

Although normally seen as non-repairable, our team were determined to try and got in touch with Dr Jono Frost, an Alternate Resident in Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery (one of only a handful worldwide), who quickly agreed to help.

Amazingly, in an incredibly complex operation (something we believe to be a world first), Dr. Frost was able to repair all three breaks and the hedgehog has made amazing progress!

It’s still early days, but food is definitely no longer a problem!

Release

After months of recovery, we’re delighted to say that the surgery was a complete success! With Dr Frost able to repair all three breaks without impairing breathing or the ability to eat, you would now never know that anything was ever wrong!

Now back to full health, this very lucky hedgehog is now safely back in the wild.
