Rescue

Marvin the baby magpie arrived at our hospital after being found alone on the ground. As he was just a tiny fledgling, still gaping and clearly missing mum, he was brought to us for help.

Magpies often learn to fly from the ground, so, it’s not always an emergency to find one there. But, when no parent returns for a long time, the best course of action is to phone your local wildlife rescue for advice.

Rehabilitation

As our first corvid baby of the year, it didn’t take long for Marvin to win everyone over. He was full of personality, endlessly curious and just a little bit cheeky. His charm quickly allowed him to steal the hearts of all of our vets and volunteers.

Within his first week in care, Marvin already began to show his determination as he was spotted testing his wings, flying inside his cage as he built his strength, every day.

Magpie Fledgling

Marvin continued to grow until he was no longer a fledgling anymore but a juvenile magpie! With this came the time to move him into an aviary for more space and a chance to spread his wings.

Marvin absolutely loved aviary life, as he zoomed around showing off his flying skills like a pro.

The aviary gives the birds that come into our care the space to build strength, practice survival skills and prepare for life back in the wild.

Release

Finally, Marvin had regained enough strength to return to the wild. As his carrier door opened, he wasted no time in zooming back into the countryside, ready to reclaim his place in the natural world.

Success stories like Marvin’s are only possible thanks to the dedication of our team and the support of people like you. Seeing him regain his strength and return to the wild is a powerful reminder of the difference that rescue and rehabilitation can make.
